Plasma is a liquid separated from anticoagulant blood, which contains, if Ca2+ is added to the plasma, the plasma will be coagulated again, so there is no free Ca2+ in the plasma. Serum is a liquid separated from coagulated blood, which is no longer available, but contains free Ca2+. If Ca2+ is added to it, the serum will not coagulate. In addition, another difference between plasma and serum is that there is much less in the serum and a lot more blood clotting products. 

The main function of plasma is to transport blood cells, transport the substances needed to maintain human life activities and waste generated in the body. Plasma is equivalent to the intercellular substance of connective tissue. It is an important component of blood, and it is light yellow liquid (because it contains bilirubin). In the chemical composition of plasma, water content is 90% to 92%, and solute is mainly plasma protein. Plasma protein is a general term for a variety of proteins, which can be divided into albumin, globulin and three types by salting out method. The functions of plasma proteins include: maintaining plasma colloid osmotic pressure; forming a blood buffer system to participate in maintaining blood acid-base balance; transporting nutrients and metabolites; plasma proteins are hydrophilic colloids; many insoluble substances combine with them to become water-soluble substances; nutritional function, plasma protein decomposition and production. It can be used to synthesize tissue proteins or oxidize decomposition energy, and participate in coagulation and immunity. The inorganic salts of plasma mainly exist in ionic state, and the total amount of positive and negative ions is equal. These ions play an important role in maintaining plasma crystal osmotic pressure, acid-base balance, and normal nerve-muscle excitability. The concentrations of glucose, protein, fat and hormones are most susceptible to the effects of nutritional status and physical activity, while the concentrations of inorganic salts vary in a small range. The relatively stable physicochemical properties of plasma are the first manifestation of homeostasis.
